Insect Bite & Tick Prevention Tips

As students, families, and staff enjoy summer activities, it’s important to take simple steps to protect against ticks, mosquitoes, and other biting insects. Whether you’re attending sports practices, visiting parks, working in the yard, or spending time outdoors with family and friends, a little prevention can go a long way.

But before we get into tips to stay safe, we have an important announcement!

Starting in August, you will have access to a new tool, Valenz Bluebook.

This is a healthcare cost transparency and provider quality platform that helps you compare healthcare providers based on price, quality, and value before receiving care. And by using the tool to select a provider that has higher quality and lower cost you can earn a cash reward of up to $1,500! Look for more details in our next Benefit Basics email.

And now, back to our insect bite prevention tips…

Ticks and mosquitoes can cause illnesses such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Taking a few precautions can help everyone stay healthy and active all summer long. Here’s some tips.

  • Dress for Protection – When possible, wear long sleeves, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes when spending time in grassy or wooded areas. Light-colored clothing can make ticks easier to spot.
  • Use Insect Repellent – Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus can help protect against bites.
  • Check for Ticks Daily – After outdoor activities check children, pets, and yourself for ticks. Be sure to look carefully around the scalp, behind the knees, under the arms, and around the waist.

If You Find a Tick

Remove it promptly using fine-tipped tweezers, clean the area thoroughly, and monitor for symptoms such as rash, fever, or unusual fatigue. Contact your healthcare provider if concerns arise.

We hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer. A few simple precautions can help protect your family while making the most of the season.
