Think Pink: Make Breast Health a Priority
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an important reminder to take charge of your breast health and encourage the people in your life to do the same.
When it comes to breast cancer, early detection matters. Breast cancer screening can help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.
Know Your Risk
Everyone’s health history is different. Factors such as age, family history, personal health history, and other considerations can affect your risk for breast cancer.
Understanding your personal risk is an important first step. Talk with your healthcare provider about your health and family history and which screenings may be appropriate for you.
Don’t Put Off Your Mammogram
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can help detect breast cancer before it is large enough to feel or cause symptoms.
For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a mammogram every two years from ages 40 through 74. Different recommendations may apply based on individual risk factors, so talk with your provider about what’s right for you.
If you’re due for a mammogram, October is a great reminder to get it on your calendar.
Know What’s Normal for You
In addition to recommended screenings, pay attention to your body. Being familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel can help you notice changes that may be a concern. If you notice a lump, pain, changes in size, or something that doesn’t seem normal for you, talk with your healthcare provider.
Take Action This October
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink. It’s a reminder to know your risk, stay informed, keep up with recommended screenings, and encourage the people you care about to do the same.
Take the Next Step for Your Breast Health
Knowing your risk and staying on top of recommended screenings are important steps in protecting your health.
